About
About HomeWatt Guide
HomeWatt Guide is a small independent publication about home power and outage prep: portable power stations, home batteries, solar kits, generators and the gear that gets a household through a blackout. We write for US homeowners and renters who want to ride out an outage, cut a bit of grid use, or take power camping without decoding marketing copy.
How we research
We are upfront about this: we have not bench-tested the products on this site. Our guides rest on three things.
- Manufacturer spec sheets. Capacity, output, charging rates, cycle ratings and weights come from each brand's own US product page. Each product card links to that page and shows the date we checked it.
- Arithmetic you can check. When we estimate runtime or size a system, we show the formula and the assumptions, such as inverter losses and depth of discharge.
- Public safety guidance. For generators, transfer switches and batteries we point to sources like the U.S. Department of Energy and the CPSC.
When a maker's own figure sounds optimistic, we label it as the maker's figure.
